Description: Also known as moth flies drain flies and sewage flies, there are 99 species in the British Isles. Tiny (2–4mm) and covered in grey or light brown hairs, it looks just like a small, furry moth. Owl midges are an excellent source of food for bats. Like moths, they can be attracted to light.

When to see it: All year round.

Diet: Adults don’t feed but spend their time mating and laying eggs in stagnant water. The larvae feed on decaying matter or bacteria in stagnant water.

Life cycle: The female lays eggs in stagnant water, such as in drains, guttering and waste pipes; also in rot holes, the water that can accumulate among fallen leaves between tree roots and wet compost heaps. The larvae pupate and emerge as an adult fly within a couple of weeks.

Garden habitats: Compost heaps, ditches, drains and sinks.

Distribution: Widespread and common in the British Isles.
